Rethinking Mental Health Reform in Korea - Using Mental Health Matrix Model

Abstract
Since the nineteenth century, treatment of mental illness has evolved from confinement in asylum to services in community, and from custodial care to psychosocial rehabilitation. Over the past several decades many nations have embarked upon
dedicated
efforts to reduce the role of psychiatric hospitals in the treatment of persons with mental illness. In this thesis, the author will raise questions about the mental health system in Korea author will raise questions about the mental health
system
in
Korea and try to answer each question by examining mental health reform process from other countries. Detailed questions follow:

1) Why a paradigm shift has occurred in mental health areas?

2) Whant are the main factors influencing the paradigm shift?

3) Does the tradition and culture of one nation influence mental health reform?

4) What are the key problems and advantages of the mental health system in Korea?

5) What are effective ways leading to the mental health reform in Korea?

6) How can people work for mental health reform?

While searching for answers, I will address the final objectives on mental health reform in Korea.

1. Providing an overview of the major developments and processes that have taken place in mental health system in Korea before and after mental health act legislation.

2. Contextualizing these developments within the clinical, social, political, cultural and economic layers of our existence in which there events and processes have occurred.

3. Analyzing the significance of these developments for those involved in mental health systems.

4. Indicating potential future policy recommendations.

Trying to find the possible answers from above the raising questions and objectives, the author will discuss the past and current mental health status in Korea using Mental Health Matrix Model. Also analyzing the results from various researches
on
mental health, the author will suggest the furture directions of mental health services to reform mental health in Korea.
